Penney is a journalist, author, speaker, trainer and broadcaster and has worked in the green sector for over 10 years. Her consultancy has guided hundreds of households and informed thousands of people about how to save money through living a greener lifestyle.
As project co-ordinator of “Green Apple Award” winning EcoTeams (part of Global Action Plan) she transformed a heavy-on-bureacracy,10 year old household programme from Holland into a simple to use action plan that was hailed by the Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee as one ‘that is changing hearts and minds’.
Penney personally led teams of households who took part in the EcoTeam programme. Over 250 households in Nottinghamshire have saved an average of £250 per annum and become far more aware of their impact on the environment. She created the first ever youth EcoTeam which has also won awards and was featured on BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours. The programme is now also running in other parts of the UK.
The EcoTeam programme has attracted great interest not only in the UK but internationally as well. Penney’s efforts have been recognised at the highest level. Last October she was invited to number 10 by the Prime Minister and Mrs Blair to attend a special reception for 100 people acknowledged to be leaders of green practice in the heart of communities.
Penney currently runs an eco bed and breakfast from her home, regularly gives lectures all over the country, is an acknowledged expert trainer in household sustainability (Environment Agency), is regularly quoted in national and local media. She runs training courses and tours at her ecohome in Nottingham /for both public and professional audiences. She is also a trainer in green issues for the construction industry.
She is a highly experienced trainer and speaker on all matters green. Her style is lively, highly informative and inspirational. She is one of the few people - male or female - who can bring everyday environmental issues to life, making it relevant and exciting for every category of audience.
Within the highest echelons of the environmental sector, her knowledge and approach is highly respected. She is acknowledged by the Environment Agency as being the foremost expert on household sustainability. She was recently made a Matron of the Women's Environmental Network.
Penney really does 'walk the talk': she and her green architect husband Gil own an ecohome, which is the most advanced eco-retrofit in the country. They have transformed their Victorian home into a period residence that costs next to nothing to run.
