Laurel Miller is the joint owner and creative director of a company that specialises in structural packaging design and new product development. She works in many product sectors including cosmetics, toiletries, perfumes, automotive, toys, consumer goods and food products.
Always leading edge, her designs are backed by a sound knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials and cost constraints, giving clients the confidence to innovate in an ever more competitive marketplace.
Laurel’s pack designs have always been based on her ethos of maximum protection/minimal use of materials - which fits hand in glove with environmental best practice. In a nutshell, she loves to solve problems and, by doing so, create beautiful and functional packs.
The fascination continues as she helps companies vastly increase sales through the magic of distinctive packaging. Laurel trained in product and related furniture design at Kingston Polytechnic before gaining her spurs working for major design consultancies such as Conran Associates, Addison, Roberts Weaver, Newell and Sorrell and Interbrand. She formed am associates in 1992 with husband and partner Stephen Aldridge.
In addition to her consultancy work Laurel has taught Product and Packaging Design at The Royal College of Art, Kingston Polytechnic, Hertfordshire University, University of the Creative Arts in Farnham and currently takes Masterclasses in Packaging Design at Sussex University.
Laurel runs Environmental Workshops for designers discussing materials and best practice. These are lively sessions which include group activities to help investigate issues such as ”where do packs end up once purchased?” (landfill, re-cycled, etc), environmental signs and symbols, and environmental best practice.
Laurel can speak on the following topics or a combination of the following depending on the target audience:
Packaging as the physical embodiment of your brand.
New product development – finding a niche and building a brand.
The retail arena as a stage. How to succeed in selling your products into supermarkets.
How to launch a new food product and be successful.
Environmental packaging – an area surrounded by misinformation and misconception.
How to create successful packaging that sells brands but is kinder to the environment.
How to tame the packaging monster – production, transportation, cost, protection, brand differentiation, display.
How to maximise shelf-space in a crowded arena, engage the consumer and sell product.
Subliminal and interactive cues in packaging.
Businesses large and small benefit from Laurel’s unique and all encompassing view of packaging and are able to implement improvements gleaned from the advice.
