Mary Rhodes is the BBC’s leading female sports news presenter. She appears regularly on BBC 1, across weekend bulletins and the Ten o’clock News. She is also presents sport on Breakfast News. Mary is the only female sports correspondent for BBC News, covering stories for the One o’clock, Six o’clock and Ten o’clock News Programmes. She has covered many major events, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon and Cricket World Cup. She is also the main female sport presenter on BBC World. At present, Mary presents the sport on Radio 4's Today programme.

After graduating at Birmingham, Mary started working for the BBC as a reporter in her home county of Hereford & Worcester in 1990. She then went on to work for a number of BBC radio stations including Gloucestershire, Manchester and Lancashire.

Following four months off to travel through Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, Mary returned to take up a position as a Press Officer for the Catholic Church. After a year of being on the other side of the fence, she decided that broadcasting was where she wanted to be.

A love of tennis led her to being asked to present on Radio Wimbledon, a station set up for the fortnight of the Championships. She was introduced to the head of BBC Radio Sport, who offered her freelance work. After freelancing across Radio 1, 2, 4 and 5, alongside independent productions, Mary was offered the role of one of the first sport presenters on BBC News 24.

Her career as a sports presenter then developed into hosting a daily sports magazine programme for the BBC, 110%. In 2000 she became the sport presenter for the Ten o’clock News, covering Champions League and International Football.

Mary grew up in Herefordshire and has recently moved from London to Warwickshire. She has a great love of the countryside. She has travelled widely and has written articles for the Guardian Travel section. To relax, Mary enjoys cooking and watching sport, she is a West Bromwich Albion supporter, which doesn’t always guarantee relaxation.


She is married, no children, but determined to own a dog soon!
