John Benjamin is an independent jewellery historian, valuer, author and lecturer. He began his career at Cameo Corner, the Bloomsbury jewellery shop notable for its stock of rare and beautiful ancient, Renaissance and Georgian gold and gem-set jewels. Qualifying as a Fellow of the Gemmological Association and gaining the Association’s Diamond Diploma with distinction, he moved to Phillips, the Bond Street auctioneers, as a cataloguer in the Jewellery Department ultimately becoming International Director of Jewellery responsible for the auctions taking place in London and Geneva. In 1999 he left to set up his own independent consultancy specialising in valuations, researching the history of jewellery, helping clients to buy and sell and undertaking presentations to corporate and private clients all over the country.
John conducts over 50 presentations, jewellery events and days of special interest every year and is a popular speaker for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies (NADFAS).
Talks are frequently accompanied by a hands-on workshop where members of the audience bring along their own jewellery to be identified and valued. These events are particularly popular with corporate clients wishing to entertain groups of delegates and ladies’ luncheon clubs. John has lectured all over the world and has been asked to accompany cruises to the Baltic and the Mediterranean as a guest speaker. In 2006 he delivered a keynote speech to the Annual Jewellery Conference in America and has lectured at both Sotheby’s Institute and Christie’s Education.
