Jonny started his career as a journalist in the mid '90s, and writing is still where his roots lie. For the last decade he's built up a captivating and influential motor-focused voice for road tests and driving adventures across publications including Car, Audi Magazine, Loaded, Zoo, Practical Classics, First Drive, Max Power and pistonheads.com. Jonny also has a weekly column in the Sunday Times called Car Shrink and regularly steps into Clarkson's shoes to write cover stories.
The TV side of things came about by complete accident. An impromptu audition led to a contract with North One TV where Jonny is now filming his fourth series of Fifth Gear alongside Tiff Needell, Jason Plato, Vicky Butler Henderson and Tom Ford. Fifth Gear is currently enjoying its 14th series, and is about to expand onto the Discovery channel with Fifth Gear Europe.
On the strength of his efforts with cars, Jonny is also filming his own 10-part series for Discovery Channel called Industrial Junkie. This is where the son and brother of two engineers walks behind the dangerous doors of huge powerful industrial processes. If you ever wondered how glass starts as stone in a quarry and ends up bolted on the side of a colossal skyscraper, Jonny's journey reveals absolutely all. With hands dirty and sweaty hard hat atop his head, Jonny's Industrial Junkie shows his true colours as an inquisitive journalist beyond cars.
He thrives to find where in Europe the longest rail tracks are made, interrogate non-English speaking factory workers, stand on top of 1500-degree furnaces or swing off buildings in his quest for knowledge about how things are made for our modern chaotic world.
When his hectic black hair, 6 foot 3" frame and trademark sideburns aren't visible, Jonny's voice has been heard on Volvo's international TV advertising campaign for the C30. He's also been interviewed on Radio 2 and Five Live whenever car related controversy looms.
