Gary Leboff is one of the UK’s premier performance coaches. Working across the arenas of business and sport, his clients range from Chief Executives to creative talents, Premiership footballers, endurance athletes and golfers.
Gary has worked with leading international footballers, golfers and rugby stars and he has amassed a wealth of anecdotes from inside the dressing room, and his tales are not only astounding, hilarious and illuminating but provide his audience with a rare insight into the inner sanctum of top class sport.
Steeped in the coaching, personal development and training environment, Gary brings a wealth of disciplines to bear. A Master Practitioner in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Gary also offers a powerful blend of Life Coaching, Gestalt and Inner Game techniques
Coaching sporting clients means working with athletes from diverse backgrounds, Gary’s brief may vary from alleviating the pressure of stressful situations (e.g. penalty shoot-outs) to preparing athletes for a hostile environment. Other benefits may include long-term goal setting, boosting self-esteem and generating peak performance. Due to the confidential nature of ongoing relationships (and the public profiles of those concerned), it is inappropriate to reveal the precise identities of Gary’s sporting clients. However, the general categories involved are: Football clubs (Premiership and The Championship) Golfers, International Rugby players and Adventure Racers.
Coaching business clients involves Gary working with organisations across the commercial sector. Activities include teamwork building, leadership development, mission alignment, collective motivation, goal-setting, induction strategies and the resolution of individual and interpersonal issues. Gary provides his clients with a compelling sense of purpose. The core of his work is reconnecting individuals with their professional integrity - the very reasons for doing what consumes them. In addition, he provides the foundation for an effective and sustainable work/life balance plus the resources for long-term achievement.
Gary Leboff is heavily involved in TV and radio and appeared in BBC2's groundbreaking series ‘The Challenge. The Challenge placed eight amateur athletes in the toughest sports events in the world. These included the Polar Challenge (a 13 day race to the South Pole in temperatures of minus 60 degrees), The Yukon (a non-stop 400 mile canoeing event across four days and nights) and climbing Mount Everest. Training for such events usually takes years and a minimum 20-30 sessions of sports psychology. In view of the time constraints imposed by the BBC, Gary had just three sessions to prepare the competitors. Far exceeding all expectations, two of the challengers won their races and a third set a new world record. All experienced a rapid increase in mental resilience, a growing awareness of personal potential and found improvement in performance.
Gary signed a publishing deal with Hodder Headline and his first book is due for publication in Spring 2006.
Testimonials include:
‘Gary Leboff’s presentation to the CorpusHabitas Business Network was received exceptionally well. To an audience of experienced senior management and consultants he explained how he successfully tackled the issue of making people winners – and more that that, how he applied his techniques to teams. He had a very short time to cover a complex subject, but he did so, even when he had to contend with faulty presentation equipment. The audience were left with some key messages, particularly that sports psychology for making winners can readily be applied to business – both for individuals and teams’

‘Your presentation was universally enjoyed and extremely thought provoking. As a marketing consultant I recognised many of the themes, not only in myself but in a number of my clients. Your explanations and strategies for becoming a winner will most certainly assist me in my everyday life as well as within the business arena’.

BBC’s series, The Challenge, provided the ultimate test of coaching ability. Gary Leboff was given just three sessions to prepare total newcomers taking part in the world’s toughest sports events. Nothing they had ever encountered would prepare the contestants for the physical and mental challenges they would face. We were greatly reliant on Gary’s expertise. Success or failure would largely depend on the resilience of contestants under conditions of extreme stress. Learning and utilising psychological tools at short notice was essential. Gary took a strategic approach, creating a psychological toolkit for each event and equipping contestants with a mental game plan. I understand that he did so by adapting many of the tools he had previously used in the arenas of business and sport.
The results achieved were beyond expectations. Two of the contestants formed part of teams that won their races and a third set a world record. All paid significant credit for their success to the work they had done with Gary Leboff.

Professional athletes not only have a range of highly developed physical skills but mental resources that enable them to think like champions, especially under intense pressure.
Such techniques are not restricted to the sporting arena. Gary Leboff provides a practical outline of these skills and begins to explain how to exploit them for business success.

The Secrets of Winning
Vijay Singh is currently the world’s No 1 golfer. 20 years ago, Vijay could barely afford the entry fee to local competitions. Vijay learned how to win. Bjorn Borg was banned from all tennis clubs in Sweden at the age of 13 for throwing his racket when defeated in tournaments. Bjorn Borg learned how to win. Most people live with a glass ceiling of success. Given two or three ‘victories’ before 11 am, they convince themselves that is their quota for the day. Such beliefs about success prevent Mr/Mrs Average from fulfilling his or her potential.
Winners do not think that way. They expect a fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh positive result. More to the point, they use that evidence to reinforce the core belief that they can keep on winning. It is a self-reinforcing cycle. This presentation also covers:
a. Clarity - the primary building block for managers Jose Mourinho has achieved unprecedented success at Porto FC and Chelsea. The secret of Mourinho’s success is clarity and his Bible of values by which all his players must abide.
Dare to Lose to Win
This was a concept introduced to the England football team by Sven-Goran Eriksson and widely credited by the players for their 5-1win over Germany. The springboard for world-class performance is the removal of fear. If fear is the focus in any field of activity, outstanding performance is impossible. Once fear is removed from the equation (and the consequences of failure), achievement levels rapidly soar. I am always interested in the answer to this question. In your organisation - what is your 5-1 waiting to happen? And how can such a performance be unleashed?
