Phillip began his career in 1979 as a booking clerk working for Radio Outside Broadcasts after deciding at a very early age that he wanted to work in broadcasting. At 19, he took a break from the BBC and moved to New Zealand with his family.
Whilst in New Zealand, he applied for jobs in broadcasting and was asked by TVNZ to front their new pop show eShazamf. Within a year he began a regular Sunday morning radio programme for an Auckland station called eRadio Haurakif and became a regular presenter of other television shows. After three and a half years he decided that it was time to return to Britain and within four months, the BBC presentation department offered him the job of fronting Childrenfs BBC from the eBroom Cupboardf; the first time in 35 years that an `in-vision' presenter had linked the weekday afternoon programmes. Phillip accepted and stayed with presentation for two years. He then went on to present five series of the popular live Saturday morning show eGoing Livef, four series of the eTake Twof, three series of his own quiz show, eThe Movie Gamef, two series of the highly acclaimed travel show eSchofield's Europef and a series of eTelevisionsf Greatest Hitsf.
Whilst continuing to create and present television programmes for both the BBC and ITV Phillip astonished everyone by stepping into the role of Joseph at the London Palladium in 1993. After exceptional reviews and the discovery that he loved the stage, he quickly made the part his own. What should have been six weeks turned into two years at the world famous theatre and a further two years touring. This was quickly followed by another West End success and World Premiere as the Doctor in the acclaimed Doctor Dolittle. After three years eTalking to the Animalsf and a spell as Jack the Ripper in the stage production of The Lodger Phillip decided it was time to return his attention to television.
In 2006, Phillip began co-hosting the ITV1 show, eDancing on Icef with Holly Willoughby. The show was seen by 10million viewers and is still growing in popularity with the sixth series being shown in 2011. Phillip can also be seen alongside Holly on the hit daytime show, eThis Morningf when she replaced Fern Britten in 2009.
Other television appearances include the 2007 eRoyal Variety Performancef, four series of eWinning Linesf live on Saturday evenings for the BBC and hosted the flagship eTest the Nationf for the channel. He also co-hosted eMr and Mrsf with his old friend Fern Britton. The duo also hosted eThe British Soap Awardsf and anchored ITV1s coverage of the eNelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concertf. Phillip played an active part in the ITV 50 celebrations, hosting two substantial network programmes. His involvement with ITV is further enhanced by the Best Ever series and an increasing amount of voice over work for major specials including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and the Muppets.
Phillip has won many awards in his long career; some of which include the National Television Award for his and Fernfs work on eThis Morningf and a number of other epublic votef awards. Phillip was voted eAll time Favourite Childrenfs Presenterf by readers of the Radio Times two years running. In 2010 Phillip celebrated 28 years in network broadcasting.
